Add a DBA to your Business Name
A Company often adds a DBA (doing business as) name to its legal name. A DBA is also sometimes referred to as a "Ficticious Business Name" or a "Trade Name"
Sole Proprietorships are often required to file a DBA if the owner(s) do business in a name other than the owners true name. For instance, if a "Mary Smith" opens a restaurant, she may not want to name the restaurant "Mary Smith's Catering". The same is true for a corporation or other entity. For instance, "ABC Corporation" may not want to do open a school as "ABC Corporation School". Both situations would be well suited for using a DBA. Mary Smith's Catering could simply be "Mary's Catering" or "Beautiful Cakes". ABC Corporation School could be "The ABC Academy" or "HappyTimes Play School."
Depending on the state, the DBA is often filed with at the State or County level of government. A DBA may also need to be published after it is filed.
The key features and benefits of filing a DBA:
►A DBA allow your business to operate under a name that is different than its legal name
►A Company may have more than one DBA
